I get the sense that the mother didn't feel comfortable interacting with the police for immigration reasons. This man threatened his victim with the deportation of her family if she tried to go back to them - sounds to me like they were undocumented.

The story seems to imply that the mother was undocumented. I know that still doesn't make it the right call, but when you live in fear of being thrown out of your home country it's not easy to trust police or anyone with any government authority.

My cousin is a teen mum trying to finish high school, and I wholeheartedly second that opinion. She's eighteen and already trying to be a role model to her daughter.
