Lasers communicate slower than the speed of light (in a vacuum) when passing through air. The speed of light, whilst a constant, changes drastically depending on the refractive index of the medium through which it is passing.

The article is conflating bandwidth with transmission time (which is essentially lag), and these are not the same thing at all.

I read nothing in this article that convinced me of the headline, and the content actually works against the assertion in the headline.

petabyte(bit)/second hasn’t anything to do with the transmission propagation rate, it has to do with the transmission bandwidth. Transmission delay has to do with the transmission propagation rate; as you noted, latency.

Or, say, not have to be constantly online to play Earthbound on the Switch.

The builders and tradesmen who build the homes I design don’t pay my salary: office building owners, law firm partners, venture capitalists,…

This project has employed hundreds of people in the hard hit marine sector and will continue to employee lots of people for the substantial on-going maintenance that will be required. Captains, engineers, all the other crew, the ports…
