Yeah, it sounds like a great deal until you realize that “tuition” counts for 10% of Mass state schools. The governor had all sorts of press conferences when the scholarship was new and failed to mention that 1. it only covered a very small portion of the cost of the going to a state school and 2. That they had

Tuition at my alma mater is $970 a year. Mandatory fees are $8,305. A scholarship that doesn’t cover fees wouldn’t be much of a scholarship.

You’re probably more likely to have a bad cab ride if you don’t seem local. I had an absolutely terrifying cab ride last time I was in NYC. I took cabs all the time when I lived in DC (pre-uber) and never had an issue.

This is a good summary of the controversy over the name change.

Yes, just like people who fly the confederate flag, women who dress as southern belles are generally super racist.

Catholicism’s policies have an impact on our lives in a way that pretty much no other religious groups’ do. A lot of Paul Ryan’s agenda is founded in his Catholicism. The Boston Archdiocese spent 850k on a single MA ballot question. And most importantly, there are many women in the US who only have access to Catholic

I don’t usually see “good” movies. Like, given the choice I’d rather see Almost Christmas than Moonlight. But the Pop Culture Happy Hour coverage of Moonlight was so enthusiastic that I may actually have to see it.

When I first read the article they were white and gold, then I clicked over to the dress article and now they’re blue and black. I can’t see blue and gold at the same time.

Wasn’t that picture taken at like 3 am? I’m going with pity.

Isn’t it a little late to start worrying about how this will affect Barron?

And? Dealing with that like an adult is part of being a teacher. There is literally nothing that the kids could have done that would explain, excuse, or put her behavior “in context.”

It’s not like Buckingham Palace would be torn down if there wasn’t a monarchy. It would still be an important tourist attraction. France spends millions on the Palace of Versailles because it’s a historic landmark and important tourist attraction.

That’s a good question. Takei and his mother were both born in California but were considered “aliens ineligible for citizenship” under the Alien Land Law which was designed to keep people of Asian descent from becoming citizens so they couldn’t own land. Oyama v. California is generally seen as the precedent that

Absolutely. Screaming at a kid that they are stupid should be enough to get a teacher fired.

Screaming like a lunatic should be enough to get her fired. The racial slurs make it much worse, of course, but screaming at kids like that is completely unacceptable.

Yes they are. Qualified teachers are inherently better teachers than people who are qualified. There are plenty of districts where TFA contract obligations have displaced real teachers looking for jobs.

TFA teachers are inherently unqualified and the most horrifyingly hateful and racist things I’ve ever heard have all been TFA kids. I don’t understand how they continue to be so successful with such an awful track record.

It doesn’t matter what the kids are doing. You never lose your shit. Ever. You’re the adult in the room and if you can’t being the adult then you don’t belong in the profession.

Very true. They initially thought the hormones from the Mirena were localized and systemic. An alarming number of providers seem to still think that’s true.

Every birth control option has risks and side effects. Your friends’ experiences are unfortunate but it doesn’t change that Mirena is over 99% effective.
