As others have said, narrative-wise, Metal Gear Solid and Snake Eater are both coherent and mostly consistent.

To be fair, I don’t think the fact that Kojima is a middling writer (at best) is really the issue. The world of videogames is FULLLLLLLLL of mediocre writers, and to your point, even the best this stuff -industry wide -probably looks cartoony and silly when compared to other mediums.
