I know all about 23 hp, but mine’s at the crank. I’m sure my van weighs a bit less than the Chevette too so really, that’s a sad thought.

10 years ago, I left my mother’s house for the last time as a resident of her address. Her neighbor (in a very nice, semi-wealthy subdivision) had recently purchased a 70-something Chevette. I had assumed it was some sort of lark, but this guy bought it to drive it to work. Everyday. I worked near him, and would see

I suspect that the Chevette in the video made such little power because it was a 1.4L, not the 1.6L... AND it was Mátéd to a power-robbing 3 speed automatic. And I also bet the carb’s adjustment might also be a factor too.

1976 Chevy Chevette 40mpg Highway

My sister bought one of these crapboxes new. You know what, forget it.

This car is one of 500, it was actually an excellent hot hatch for the day, and the majority have already met their doom in the insatiable maw of The Crusher. There are examples that have been for sale/sold for more than this already. This is objectively a Nice Price and this car will continue to appreciate in value.

Two reasons only do I vote NP:

Is the price too high? Yup. Do I give a shit? Nope. Many a good and illegal times were had in a red one of these back in the 80's. Nostalgia says bend me over the hood and violate me. NP.

Fuck that price and all that, but sweet Jesus, I cannot believe my eyes! The condition of this thing is just incredible. I mean, stop and consider what we’re seeing here. The contemporary equivalent is as if someone bought a Dodge Neon SRT-4 in 2005, and didn’t completely fuck with the car by spray painting the hood

I know it’s a big asking price, and I really have no idea where the market price for these things is now, but...after the dark years of the 70s and sub 200 horsepower Corvettes, manufacturers figure out how to make power and meet emissions in the 80s, low miles, great shape, Shelby name, turbo four, like most

This is a super clean example of this model, but it’s too rich for my blood. Man, look at those seats though. Pristine. Always loved the amount of bolstering for an economy car of this era. It was unheard of. And they were on base model Omnis too.

CRX HF, if I remember correctly.

Yeah bit there’s still going to be someone that only ever buys GM cars that gets on here and tells us how great and powerful and reliable they were, and imports are overpriced, and if you don’t agree you’re just a Honda/Toyota/quality car fanboi. If I’m right, I’ll lump the Chevette truthers in with the Cobalt/Malibu

I’m old enough to remember these cars well. They were terrible. A friend of mine had a 77' Chevette in high school and getting on the freeway meant you needed to make sure nobody was coming in the near future because the acceleration was basically non existent.

As tempted as I am to say that the original Chevette was state-of-the-art subcompact from a Big-3 automaker in ‘76, the Ford Fiesta was actually a kick-ass little bugger, though a little pricier.

As a kid in the 60s and a teen in the 70s, I remember this car as the third car for many families. Mom kept the Vista Cruiser of course, and dad had a Monte Carlo or T-bird with a 350/454 or 351/390 respectively and then the Arab Oil Embargo and gas crunch hit. So instead of trading in, Dad would go down the

You are thinking of the vega - not the chevette.

I think its important to note that all American cars were shit in the 70's. Reliability was considered amazing when a car made it to 80,000 miles. Brand new cars leaked oil and rattled and squeaked, nothing was ever sorted. The fact they are driving a car from 1976 speaks volumes to how well some of the parts were

I’ve always wanted to own an older car just because they are so different than today’s cars. However outside of a select few car models, it seems that cars from the 70's and 80's are pretty much crap.

Now playing

Just a little more insight into how bad these cars really were.
