I’d say that it’s not quite so cut and dry there. If you purchase a Dodge Charger, Dodge can say that you shouldn’t alter it all they want. But you’re within your rights to do whatever you want with it while it’s in your own possession. Putting aftermarket parts on your copy of Super Mario World is no different.

It doesn’t matter. To quote Nintendo: This includes videos featuring tool-assisted speedruns, which require making a copy of a game’s ROM file, and running the copied ROM through an emulator.

Andy Warhol used a Campbell’s Soup can asset in his famous pieces of art. I’m not sure that Campbell’s could have claimed the pieces as derivative. But now we’re getting onto a true form of “games as art” argument, which I’m not sure is on point here.

I’m speaking specifically of the TAS portion of the article and Nintendo’s email. Not so much on the legality of IPA patches and derivative works. That gets really murky really quickly.

Except that a TAS, more than even a Let’s Play, is very much a transformative work. They nearly always do things that are not really possible to do via human interaction, and sometimes even create results that were 100% unintended by the media creators. Take SMW Snake or SMW On Twitch.

I’d like to point out that Nintendo is in fact, 100% wrong. You can play back TASes on 100% stock equipment. Standard NES, standard cart. The only thing non-stock is the machine pushing inputs through the controller port. See: AGDQ/SGDQ TAS blocks.

No, Nintendo pretty much says that any reproduction is illegal and you can’t do it. In actuality, it’s way more murky. It’s legal, and in fact a protected right to make backups of *your own* software and use it.

Can you please point out how a TAS is illegal? I mean, Nintendo says it’s against their Creators Club code of conduct. But they can say that if they want to. It’s their CoC.

Paladin Shields for everybody!

LEVERAGE! ::Wiggle 6th finger::

To each their own, and I do have an account I upkeep with GoG.

Why on earth would I import my 100%-complete-too-many-hours-spent save when I can now experience this masterpiece all over again? To Steam!

Day one. Or zero if I can get Amazon to ship it any faster. I get backward song compatibility, can use my old instruments, and get an all new gameplay experience. I haven’t been this excited for a game release since Skyrim. It’s too bad that there’s something called Fallout 4 coming out soon after that’s going to eat

Offhandedly brought up the fact that I had a crush on a mutual classmate of ours to my wife just after we were married. This was before she and I were dating, and I never asked the crush out, was fine with it being just that. Yep. That was a mistake.

Ugh, that’s exactly what I could have used at the start of my marriage. I probably sounded exactly like this SO, which made me feel like an ass.

Why would you do that to an innocent whale?!

Dammit, I am at work. To watch the footage and explain to IT why I was on Pornhub or to hope it stays up till I get home?!

Didn’t know about the aftermath, but yeah, that run was a bit cringy. Which was interesting since his Sonic run was far more sedate. Until you brought this up and I looked up the runners per game, I didn’t even realize it was the same guy. Very odd. He seemed to enjoy himself in Sonic and hated his life (and the game)

Ahh, makes sense. Thanks for the clarification. And agreed!

What happened with SGDQ? About the only thing that I could think is contentious is that the stream hosted a random runner afterwards and blew up his chat for a bit. I mean, I suppose it wasn’t very kid friendly since he was freaking out and cursing, but that’s about it. Did I miss something here?
