there’s a fundamental difference between visual media made to show on a theater screen, and that designed to run on a monitor or a phone

At the risk of sounding like “an old man yelling at clouds,” I do think there’s something to the argument that movies play in cinemas. It’s certainly not the only defining factor, but it’s been an integral part of the film-watching experience since the Lumières freaked people out with their train.

The funny side to this attitude is that since the advent of the video recorder, the marketing push by studios for Oscar movies has been based on removing the need for Academy voters to ever set foot in an actual theatre!

Is it Netflix’s fault that fewer people go to the theater. Or were fewer people going to the theater and Netflix filled a hole in the market?

The irony is that the Academy sends out DVDs for judges to vote on, so unless he wants to start renting out theaters for judges to screen films, the nominees all got “viewed” on the same TV sets that Roma did.

I don’t consider this any one party or persons fault. Both parties deserve equal blame on this one. Someone needs to swallow their pride and put us back to work. I would not mind an apology from both sides as well.
