I’m not sure what you mean about things randomly breaking. Nothing you’re describing is random. Why not just disable the automatic installation of 3rd party updates? I already mentioned this.
So turn off those features and don’t use the applications that show ads. Not sure what’s difficult about this especially for people who would otherwise claim they’re computer literate and/or power users.
