I mean, it isn’t really a lie. Straws are bad. They aren’t as bad as other things, but you can say that about anything. There’s always a worse thing. If we can stop using straws, sure, that might not be as good as if we stopped buying things with packaging, or all carried around our own cups or forks or something, or…

Actually, straws can be made of biodegradable materials like waxed paper and wood and so forth. So not exactly true.

Exactly. The entire point of starting with something like straws is that it’s easy to stop using them or replace them with a different type. Once people experience how easy it is, then they won’t be as resistant to eliminating other types of disposable plastic products. Nobody is claiming that the ocean will be 100%…

Couldn’t agree with you more. Straws may be symbolic, but it’s surprised me how many friends/acquaintances I’ve come across that have latched onto it.  The more we think about the consequences of packaging and “disposable” plastic, the better off we’ll be.
