Joan’s efforts to reach the subject would involve sending off a random emailto marieclaire@gmail.com she doesn’t expect to reach the subject, but then making sure to note her efforts to reach them as part of the story, because in journalism it’s the minimal effort that counts.

I like how Joan Summers of Jezebel is questioning a hard-working BIPOC journalist’s integrity. Your only “source” is her Instagram post? Why are there no quotes from Whitney in your piece? Did you even interview her? Give me a break. I thought we woke women were past tearing each other down.

Nearly every celebrity profile in a magazine is there for the purposes of promotion for their newest movie/show, album, book, or passion project. This symbiotic relationship between publication and celebrity is not new.

My understanding is that the reason Jenna did the gender reveal in the first place is because she’d had a series of miscarriages and wanted to celebrate something positive. She didn’t do it because she cared about the gender of her child.
