My 2001 Rave Green VW Gti, bought it new. First new car I bought (and the alst ironically). It was slapped together, massive panel gaps, attrocious reliability. (Electrical problems, manual transmission failures). I drove it like it was made of glass, I was so worried it would break. Apparently assembled in Brazil. Sol

Going to have to say it, Classic SAAB 900 Turbo.
Double wishbone suspension and “passive rear steering”, equal length front axles so minimal torque steer and impressive handling for a FWD car. And just look at it:

Came here to say this! Gen I w126 had some lovely ribs.

There has been such a romance with the 7-4-7 in my life even from when I was a boy. Wanted to be a commercial 747 Pilot when I was a boy (still do??). Its “a classic” as the seasoned 47 Pilots call it. Wonderful aircraft, I rode on one decades ago and a little part of me died when they were retired from most passenger

Long Beach GP, I cant emphasize how good that event is in person. If you love racing this , IMO, one of the best US hosted events.

Thank you so much for this article. I had some good chuckles on this one. That darn rainbow road... my son know how to push me off the edge every damn time.

Because ... integrity?

How is did the Jersey Jughandle not make this list?

As a 1990 SPG owner, I was glued to this movie lol. I think the car is on screen as much as the actors are.

God I love that. Thank you VW for believing.

It actually IS historically and culturally significant. In addition to its service history in WWII its an icon for the city of Long Beach. I’m particularly fond of it myself as a native SoCal guy.

Are these still available in a manual though? If so yes obvious choice is obvious.

Also GTI, but i know there are only so many times one can say that.

All very true. I looked or one for an entire year and found one at a Mercedes dealer in FL that was under-priced for the price of a used camry. That and Audi AllRoad but the W212 was the one I really wanted. Even then (a year ago) it was under-priced but now its worth silly money. I’ll probably be one of those people

Very pretty. However 15 feet long isnt very long, for reference a 1990 Saab 900 is 15' 3" long. a 2020 Honda Civic is 15' and change long so its kind of compact for a wagon anyway. Not that is bad or anything, but i see why they are using that sort of nomenclature.

Totally, I make a decent wage but even then there is no way I could afford an E-class wagon new, especially with kids etc. They hold their value so much more than the sedans so its funny how they dont depreciate much... but there arent enough people to want to spend the 70k and up base price for one. Maybe fewer lease

Same here, 2014 E250 4Matic wagon. God i love this car. I’ve been driving wagons for over 20 years, Volvos, Saabs and now Mercedes. I will really miss the long roof when its gone.

Jay Leno has one of the seven made.

Amen. I lost my favorite car company, both as a company and as a maker of awesome-y goodness. I gave up my last 9-5 wagon 6 months ago and I still miss it. Now I wander aimlessly for posts like this dreaming of owning once again.

Had the same response. Its a $2k car... what is he/she expecting with that? Is it really the cars fault or the previous 6-7 owners who didnt give a crap about the cars maintenance .

I’m surprised the Toyota 4Runner isn’t on here (first gen). 4 cylinder version, just about the easiest thing to work on. Great for the bush mechanics. Also any old Mercedes, w123, w126 are great to work on. Lots of space to wrench, they are complicated but in a mechanical way that doesn’t require much skill in most
