I remember that the details of this one were particularly heartbreaking — how he tried to apologize to the officers as they were killing him, how he would play violin to shelter cats to try to comfort them, how gentle and kind he was said to be. A brutal crime by the police, and a horrifying, tragic loss to his family

Any time someone rhymes “unfurled” with “world,” you know it’s going to be a work of art.  Kind of like the Chicago Bears rhyming “girl” with “chocolate swirl” in Super Bowl Shuffle.

My impression is that it’s not so much her face that she’s talking about, but the large, rectangular lumps of hardened fat on her body that are the biggest issue. They’re not only disfiguring, but they are apparently painful (they aren’t soft like regular fat, so they chafe to the point of bleeding) and the ones by

This kind of story, involving horrors inflicted by real people, is the most frightening type of story. I’m glad the police took this seriously and that your sister escaped any further harm.

OMG

I promise I don’t normally criticize people’s looks in such a petty way, but photos like this make her chin implant so obvious.  There’s nothing about this person that is real or authentic, except the authentic lack of self-awareness or shame.

This line is a masterpiece:

I saw him in Book of Mormon, years before I knew who he was, and he was very funny.

This is beautiful and kind of heart-stopping:

I can’t tell you how much I enjoyed reading this list.  Thank you for compiling it.

My initial reaction to your first post was to scoff at your claim of “extenuating factors.” Millions of people have children or family members with not-fully-effective immune systems, or live near a heavy population of Asian people, or whatever — so it seemed silly (or self-indulgent) to suggest that you had a special

I never knew this about Luz Long. I just did a bunch of reading about him and his friendship with Jesse Owens thanks to your post, and the letter Long wrote to Owens before his death (and Owens’s later friendship with Long’s family) actually brought tears to my eyes. And I’m a cold-hearted misanthrope who rarely cries.

I love that photo, and your description of the boy’s expression is perfect. That photo, and the one where Obama bends down to let a little boy touch his hair, are so pure and capture something so unspeakably wonderful.

Your story is both adorable and funny and also terrible (in that it’s terrible that this guy was harassing you). Your daughter sounds delightful

Just wanted to note that your posts are very thoughtful and I really admire the tact and humor with which you’re responding to some of the silly criticism you’ve gotten.

He looks awesome.

That’s an objectively beautiful cat, and also a very nice photograph

Years ago, when Paris Hilton was at the height of whatever bizarre and unsettling fame thing she had, someone mentioned that she looked like uncooked chicken. This was so weirdly accurate that I’ve never been able to unsee it.

Yes ... When I saw the first Fantastic Beasts movie in theaters, the whole audience groaned when Johnny Depp was revealed.

This has nothing to do with anything, but just wanted to mention that my young daughter spent some time with Tamron Hall a few years ago, and that Ms. Hall was kind, warm, intelligent, and basically awesome.
