MCU is just another level. Goddamn WandaVision. 23 films, 12 TV shows in and they give us this masterpiece of nostalgia and grief as a psychic prison.
Even as we engage in all manner of fantastic things, even as we pride ourselves in great leaps of imagination, we are limited by our biases, prejudices, social conformities largely invisible to us. There’s no reason at all Princess Leia couldn’t have been a black woman. Or a trans black woman.
I love the idea of Ackmena as a lesbian and I revel in the butthurt any of these assholes feels about it. You can have a crawfish as a Navy Admiral, a little blue elephant as a band leader, and a giant fanged anus out in the desert, but god forbid a female bartender turns out to be a dyke.
It’s always painful for me to think how if Disney had just pulled back a little bit from wanting to blow its load and took some time to develop a story that truly honored this beloved franchise, how different it would be.
