Let’s say that Mayor P.B. figured out that the squiggy feelings he got in the locker room was teh gay at 16 or so. He then spent 17 years in the closet. He’s been out for four.

Mr. Softener isn’t completely wrong. Calling a guy “Mary” can be misogynistic and homophobic. My only point has been that there was a time and context where it wasn’t.  And let’s face it, we’ve all had to hit the Aloe Vera sometimes. 

I won’t ever critcize someone for coming out late, but when someone who came out very late wants to be a leader, and possibly makes their gayness central to their campaign narrative (while simultaneously disowning its importance), I reserve the right to try to interpret their late coming out for signs of what it might…

Neoliberal is pretty much the opposite of liberal, yet is shared economic orthodoxy among the Republican Party and the Clinton wing of the Democrats.

My original reply to you was not about Peck’s use of the term “Mary”. It was very clearly about a historical use of the term, where people who did NOT see gender non-conformity as “less than” used it in a way that was NOT a homophobic put down. 

Absolutely. There is not, and should not be any particular type of gay person that is is seen as the sole socially acceptable expression of gayness. But more than 40 years out of the closet has taught me to be suspicious of gay people who go out of their way to make it clear what kind of gay person they are not.…

For using a woman’s name with reference to a man to be “belittling”, you must first agree that women, or the gender non-conforming, are somehow “less than” males. THAT is misogynistic.
