The problem for a Quebecer is that heat pumps don’t pump much heat at -40, so they would still rely on resistive back up heat some of the time. (still worth having a heat pump tho)
A small oil fired heater running on diesel fuel would be convienient to refuel. Webasto makes a diesel powered block heater for diesel owners who can’t plug in (also: instant cabin heat!). It might only take a bit of re-engineering to use it to heat the battery coolant.
Or the female LBJ, maybe.

You might try a battery warming blanket. It makes all the difference for giving your starter motor enough twist in the cold. I use mine whenever it goes below -15 Celsius. (2005 Jetta wagon, BEW)
