You seem a little out in the cold here so I’d like to say I’m skeptical as well. I don’t think that makes me some anti-science loon. Any true science is based on skepticism. So the idea that having doubts is anti-science is a little anti-thinking, IMO.
I am actually, admittedly, sometimes pretty anti-science. Not for religious reasons. I just think the idea that science never screws up is probably false.
I only have one issue with GMOs used in developing countries and that’s the issue of cross pollination. I am only relatively well read on the topic (as in, have read some studies, agree that the claims of DNA alteration in humans seem melodramatic, but still see real concerns for crops, etc).
Ok I’m not even being argumentative here, but I thought there had been a number of studies proving that aspartame was “safe” but also really fucking bad for you?
GMOs will not help deal with climate change or rapid population growth. It doesn’t matter how much food we have - we can currently feed everyone on the planet with the food we produce right now - what matters is money to buy food, stability (no war, fear), infrastructure (can’t easily go to market without a road), and…
She ran into controversy even before the unfortunate sex party booboo, reportedly criticizing President Obama’s statement that marijuana is pretty similar to alcohol and saying that drug cartel violence in Mexico against children and civilians somehow means the drug war is working.
Hopefully the rest of the DEA won’t be too far behind.
Michele Leonhart, the head of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, is reportedly due to announce her…
Bingo. Nailed it! +1
The people pushing GMOs want to sell pesticides and herbicides. They want to create a closed, proprietary system that coerces growers to use products exclusively from a single manufacturer. In the future, there won’t be Gala or Washington apples, just Dow and DuPont ones.
No, he was an extremely well-respected, accomplished doctor for years. You don’t become the head of cardio at Columbia Presbyterian by shilling dietary supplements. My friend went to Columbia Med and had him as a professor pre-fame and said that he was a good teacher and a brilliant surgeon.
Scientists are just as likely to be motivated by greed, prejudice, or any folly of human nature, as anyone is. Maybe some just want to stay on the payroll or see their stock options increase in value.
Oh shit, I forgot to read EVERY ARTICLE everyone posted links to!
No we havent. There is a huuuuuge difference between selective breeding and genetically modified organisms. Absolutely huge.
Hmmmmmm maybe he had them hired to do this, hmmmm
Here we go w/ the insults. Is it my job to fight he billion dollar corn industry’s lobbyist?
From what I read he’s almost a cliche of how a desire for fame and money can corrupt someone. He used to be be reputable and normal but he got a little taste of glamour and went completely off the deep end.
We get it, you are pro GMO and think that the lack of funded studies on GMOs showing they cause harm is “proof” that they are safe and we should just allow corporations that profit from GMOs to just have free reign.
Exactly. The intense and very expensive lobbying (record amount of money spent) that went into not having to disclose GMO products is the lede that keep getting buried.
