I don’t have a blanket objection to GMOs.

They may be acceptable for human consumption, but it’s impossible to say they are safe. GMOs are made with harmful pesticides.

Thanks. Groupthink isn’t just a Kinja blog.

Oh you’re trolling me hard.

I don’t have a blanket objection to GMOs.

So, if you use your imagination, there are many ways that GMOs can be used to sell related goods. What is Monsanto seeds didn’t germinate without a chemical called “Life by Monsanto”. Any normal process of life that can be altered by genetic modification is a business opportunity. Publicly traded companies have one

Not if they cause the organisms they’re meant to kill to evolve resistance.

Did I say I shop at Whole Foods or something? I don’t. Did I say I only eat organic? I don’t. I eat conventionally made food mostly and I’m pretty sure it’s part poison.

I’m talking about creating a genome that serves business interest first. Monsanto sells Roundup, they sell Roundup ready seeds. Why not create a chemical license key, so that Monsanto seeds only grow when purchased from the manufacture. Why not insert genes so that plant can only get nourishment from Monsanto

I know about that. I’m not pretending I don’t eat conventionally grown food.

Absolutely. Did you know glyphosate is the most common herbicide?

That was me. I said that because my concern with GMOs has to do with herbicides, resistance, and using every life form on the planet as a research subject.

For real, I ended up in the bulk foods department before I quit.

The people pushing GMOs want to sell pesticides and herbicides. They want to create a closed, proprietary system that coerces growers to use products exclusively from a single manufacturer. In the future, there won’t be Gala or Washington apples, just Dow and DuPont ones.

Scientists are just as likely to be motivated by greed, prejudice, or any folly of human nature, as anyone is. Maybe some just want to stay on the payroll or see their stock options increase in value.

If scientific evidence indicated jumping of a cliff would help you live longer, would you do it?

If you were a smoker or eugenicist in the early 20th century, you could say the same thing.

OP is you. And you we’re kind of being dickish about it in that post. I disagree with you but I’m certainly not trying to disrespect you.

That’s completely my point. I totally agree with you.

I’m liberal, but I’m not some crunchy hippie like you. I think a lot of allegedly scientifically-inclined liberals are on the wrong side of this issue because it’s a good opportunity to jump on an annoying subset we’d rather not always be associated with, withe people with dreads and hemp tote bags full of organic
