"Unrealistically affluent environments?" I'm not trying to start anything, but seriously? There are plenty of middle class and upper middle POC. So in what way do you want the representation to be "more realistic?" Especially considering how many predominately white shows have white characters with ridiculously

I feel like the people of color on Shonda Rhimes' shows are written as people of color and that is the point. If a creator who happens to be of color doesn't create with the expectation that some of their characters will be also of color then experience tells us that it just won't happen. I also find it curious that

Yeah, she probably wouldn't be.

I really think you're misstating the diversity of Grey's Anatomy. The original cast of Grey's was 5 whites, three blacks, and an Asian woman. If Mindy or Lena had started out with that much diversity in their first season, they would not be criticized nearly as much as they are right now.

But, that's just it. Shows like Friends, Seinfeld, How I Met Your Mother, etc., kept their pure white casts despite the criticism, not because they weren't criticized enough (unless you're talking about white people, because POC criticized them plenty).

Friends had one (1) black recurring character in all it's seasons. And that was after an incredible amount of pressure. Not exactly impressive, for a show set in fucking Manhattan. Black people were absent even in the background.

Yeah, I actually found her saying she has four series regulars who are women the most annoying part of this because it's like... really? The women (other than Mindy) are barely characters on the show. It's all about Mindy and the guys (the guys she's dating and Danny, Morgan, and now, to a lesser extent, Adam

But that's not true. There's a history of fans and critics wanting to see more diversity in shows that feature all-white casts: "Cheers," "Fraiser," "Friends," How I Met Your Mother," and most recently "Girls." Don't ask me how I know this, just look it up. Now the question of diversity in casts should be answered by

I have to say, I'm really sick of this excuse that people use for Lena and Mindy. That no one is demanding more from everyone else. That's not true! WHITE PEOPLE may not be demanding more, but plenty of Black, Latino, and Asian organizations and individuals have been lamenting the lack of diversity in television

But Modern Family actually is diverse—Sofia Vergara, Rico Rodriguez, and the little girl adopted by "Mitch" and "Cam". Diversity doesn't just mean black people (and I say that as a black person).

Dear Mindy,

Yeesh, look, I get Mindy's point, but she has a gigantic chip on her shoulder when asked about anything about being a woman in her field or diversity. Sorry, if you're breaking barriers (which she IS) you're gonna get asked about it. You don't have to like it, but it seems kind of immature or unprofessional to lash

Yes. The really odd thing is that she's almost asking to be given a pass because she's an Indian woman. Even if you take her point on ethnic diversity, there's no explaining the lack of other women in substantial roles on the show. I am running out of like for Mindy.

"I have to surround myself with white dudes so white people will watch my show. Just like any other show."—Honest!Mindy

I think those feelings come from a place of frustration and hurt more than wanting to hold Kaling to a double standard. People credit Shonda Rhimes, and rightly so, for promoting color blind casting and ensuring she has an ethnically diverse cast. The fan probably hoped that Mindy Kaling would do something similar

Mindy, a hit dog will holler. Mindy worships all things white. If she could wake up tomorrow and be white she would be ecstatic. Yeah there are 4 women on her show currently. They got a line per episode while she chases the white guy du jour.

I'm a fucking Indian woman also, but it doesn't mean I don't think about ways to challenge people's notions of diversity. While I agree that a double-standard exists and no one person should be responsible for breaking all the barriers, I don't think it hurts to challenge onesself to keep pushing boundaries.

I honestly don't see the problem here. You don't deserve to play if you can't handle softball questions.

Not sure if the entire clip was shown here (can't currently watch) but Mindy started that train of dialogue. She was asked by the interviewer what she thought the other attendees were thinking about her on the Vanity Fair after party arrivals carpet and Mindy said they were thinking something akin to, "Oh, there goes
