You have to appreciate the sleeper effect of being generic looking. Thats why m5's are so cool. Just look like a regular sedan but bam huge power under the hood and from the factory none the less.

IMO the e39 is a better looking car. Also I think they are a better value in terms of how much happiness you get per $ spent. Why not save some of the money from the e60 get the e39 and take it on a cross country rip with the savings. or to the track. or both

The BMW z8 came at the wrong time. A really nice looking car that would have been a great "super car" competitor in the 90's but entered the market in 2000. In the early 2000's brought so many new cars to compete for the high end buyers it is no surprise that sales plummeted. There was:

Really not a bad commuter car. I mean super boring but great on gas and easy as possible to drive. Too bad so many terrible drivers have given these things a asshole reputation on the road.
