I know what you mean by trucks getting bigger. I own a 1989 f-150 xlt lariat reg. cab longbed 4x4. the weight with .25 tank of gas is 4,065 lbs accross a certified scale.

I don't really think that the Dakota forced anyone's hand, otherwise you'd see midsized pickups from ford and gm. ford debated the f-100 for a while but in the end decided that the f-150 was just too good of a thing. GM had similar plans.
