Great review, great movie. I for one appreciate the acknowledgement of Anita Loos’ novel, which is hilarious.

“Holland and Zendaya are younger than the past Spider-Man leads, but it’s still remarkable to see a couple of twentysomethings evoking sweet, genuine teenage awkwardness.”
I still remember an Arte Johnson pilot episode, Call Holme, that aired but never got picked up. He played a not-very-good private eye who was a master of disguise. It gave Johnson a chance to do hats, wigs, costumes, etc. and assume funny personas in the pursuit of criminals.
It wasn’t just his Ignatius voice and the narration - he managed to get Burma Jones in a way that wasn’t a total caricature. Given the way Jones’ dialogue is written in the novel, that’s quite a feat. Again, it’s one of my favorite novels, I’m not dissing Toole, who as near as I can tell was approximating a New…
The article mentions his work in audiobooks, and I can recommend one at least: he recorded a version of Confederacy of Dunces a few years back. It was abridged and I rarely even think of listening to those. But the notion of Johnson’s voice(s) matched with one of my favorite novels made it hard to resist. And I’m glad…
tweaks the basic plot of Collateral into a shrill buddy-cop scenario.
I haven’t seen The Bodyguard, ever. But I assume there’s an ending where Whitney and Kevin -even though they sleep together (again, I assume) eventually break up? So was there envisioned a series of movies where Costner guards, beds and leaves a series of women? The (I just looked it up) FrankFarmerverse!
I have to buy a car today. It sucks
I think I will watch Years and Years - it lines up with my recent real-life disappointment that I won’t get to live in the cool part of the post-apocalypse, but only watch the world drag itself toward the cool part. In the meantime I will still have to work and pay for things.
I kind of want to see the new Star is Born, because I like Bradley Cooper, and I’ve been told that Lady Gaga is great in it. I somehow have not heard one song from it (and have been told I will like those.) But man - I’ve seen every version of the story. The first one’s the best, the Fredric March/Janet Gaynor, but non…
To answer your question...Tree of Life. Didn’t care for it one bit.
I’ll probably catch it on a pirate site...no way I’m signing up for Facebook for this.
The Sistine Chapel wasn’t painted in a day.
“Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”- William Shakespeare.
But jive talking crows remain perfectly acceptable
I promise that I am not taking this animated prospector doll quite as seriously as you think I might be
“ at no point in the scene is it implied that this is proper behavior.”
But it is, unquestionably, played for laughs.
West Side Story is widely loved I think... and I always thought it was awful. I like musicals fine, but it just didn’t work for me.
We’re still calling college women “co-eds” in 2019?
I prefer to use more of the line: “Listen, bud - he’s got radioactive blood.”
