Yes and this is a recent thing. I do not think that that was as common or normal years ago and given the average age of vehicles is 12+ years old there are lots of trucks out there without locking rear diffs.

That is a recent thing go back 10-40 years of new trucks and they did not come with rear lockers. I just looked on the ford and nissan build and price pages for trucks and rear lockers were optional. 

I drive on these roads often. I have a jeep wrangler with just limited slip diffs. NO lockers. Up until recently most 4wds did not come with locking diffs from the factory. In my opinion and experience on these roads it is really about clearance. 4wd tend to be higher off the ground and able to clear rocks and ruts…

For the longest time the wrangler was both the entry level jeep and the best off road. Now the wrangler is a high end jeep and jeep has no entry level off roader.
