Packing a lunch as been cheaper for me than eating out of vending machines or going out for lunch my entire working life of 38 years. I can pack a lunch for less than $2/day.

In countries with actual decent public transport that nearly everyone uses it is much better. Here in the land of the individual car we leave public transport to the poor and those that cannot have/afford a car and treat public transportation as a dumping ground and not a public good.
