And thanks to the convoluted NHL regular season point system (3-on-3 OT wins count as much as regulation wins), record is not a great indicator of the best team. Adding more variance to the format only exacerbates the problems that already exist.

What they should do is implement something like the DH in baseball for bad free throw shooters. Nobody wants to see terrible foul shots.

Disagree. They actually decreased the number of games played within the division during the regular season, and the constant playoff rematches can favor an inferior team due to the familiarity. More of a gimmick than an ideal playoff format.
They don’t do this anymore, and now the NHL playoffs are worse.
