sadly, many animals deteriorate during long shelter stays. Cats get super sick, and dogs go nuts. It's too much liability to adopt out a dog who is known to be aggressive or to have bitten anyone. Sadly we all tend to bond with the long time guests.

I volunteer for an animal charity and we're not a 'no-kill' because unfortunately that's not really a practical course of action but more 'low-kill' as in the time I've been there about two I've only known of something like three animals that had to be put down.
