Since he’s dealing with rust issues, I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s why he’s having trouble getting a good ground. Living in the rust belt with a rusty old vehicle, you have to clean the grounds once in awhile.

im sure they're there. rust just doesn't make a good electrical path.

I would guess at least half of the ground straps have rusted off.

But with the WJ, don’t I want the V8 for the better trans?

I would also check that all the chassis and engine ground straps are present and in good order. Missing ground straps will definitely give you wacky electrical issues.
