Though very efficient, my company car (15 Legacy Limited) has never gotten past 35mpg highway.

and trust me, the E250 (even in 4-matic form like mine) can routinely get 45 mpg on long trip via the highway, with the AC on, in the summer. I peaked at 51.1 mpg ( @ 80mph cruise ), but that was only on 1/2 tank with no wind, cool morning temps, minimal AC, etc.

I think you should review what I wrote again... and of course a 50's car is going to cave in like nothing... this video is what? 6? 7 years old?
