Dinner with the elderly cult of 45 relatives:

I taught into Poli Sci years ago and always said “I don’t care what you think, just that you do think” and, by and large, the students that came in with conservative views left wholly uninterested in thinking anything but where they started.

It’s not just immigrants. My MIL thinks every doctor of color only got into med school by Affirmative Action-ing white geniuses out the door, no matter original country.

Because Simmons can’t write anything without name-dropping. It’s collective tiredness with his schtick, not the individual bit.

I miss either when Simmons was relevant or when I was young enough and naive enough that he seemed relevant. I don’t envy him his personal successes...I just stopped caring about a millionaire’s pretend guy-next-door act.

The Clarkson University Golden Knights suddenly regret their above-average season putting them into the NCAA title picture and public eye...

Yes, because it’s the NFL that’s sponsored by the government/armed forces.

As long as you stay in your dead-end jobs and don’t need to stop working, anyway.

Having grown up there...yes. That we lived in a snow-covered frozen tundra with minimal education and no infrastructure was never a reason for our economic issues...it was “those people in the cities” conspiring to keep us down.

It’s like the idea Americans can always just pick up and relocate is a myth or something.

Seriously...inform him at his check-in that it’s the end of the appeals. He goes home, there’s some public outcry and twitter-storm, a few celebs speak out for him...not the prospect of a riot in the street and protest marches because it looks like he was ICE-napped to his associates.

I’ve never worked there, but it’s one of very limited shopping choices near me and I’m certainly in the 20 years I’ve lived here that no one in that store has been on staff the whole time.

And here we have the Medicaid cuts based on “able bodied” status to push more marginal people into needing work, just to keep the churn going.

That’s a huge thirty cent raise above minimum wage...wow.

semi-related aside: at one point, the local I-legally-can’t-say-scam of a discount car dealer had garnishments going on approximately half the FT workers at the nearby Walmart. So these workers had put their hard-earned money into a car, which later died or got repo’d (usually after a single missed payment) and were

Ah, I was wondering how the Strawman family was or wasn’t celebrating their holidays this year.

That they didn’t announce the closings in advance but tried to hide it behind their “good” behavior just makes them look extra malevolent. Today at our local Sam’s vendors and trucks were showing up to be turned away because they had to keep their bad news quiet, creating a mess across the supply chain.

I’ve heard that about Supreme Court justices in the past, too. Pretty sure the liberal wing would Weekend at RBG if they needed to now, too.

I can’t even wrap my head around this, having based a large portion of my weekend life on a 1-5 blackout for decades.
