Honestly asking: do they really believe that drying up the social safety net is going to make people get jobs and build some robust economy?
I grew up, not in Appalachia, but in another mythic American rural area. I only regret the foaming at the mouth I lapse into about all the lies and myths we were taught from an early age prevented me from writing my version of this book.

Wholly agree. And I owe that to the professor who put this idea out there 25 years ago and forced us to confront the idea that, pasty yet poor as we were, there were other factors in play.
