In this case, the study actually supports that interpretation, as the main variable influencing aggression occurrence is female alcohol consumption.

I wouldn't say that we already do that. In fact, I'd say that as a culture we promote gluttonous levels of consumption of most things, booze included.
Well said. I think having at least one sober mind/body around is just a good idea in general, for males and females alike.
You are totally correct, but that doesn't change the fact that it is still wise to encourage women to not get so drunk that they make themselves conspicuous targets.
There is a disconnect between the pragmatic and the moral side of this. Morally, of course all blame should fall upon the rapist no matter how intoxicated a woman is. Practically, it is likely much more effective for women to take precautions than it is to try to "change the culture," whatever that looks like. …
going to 'pick up' people at bars is gross.
Leave your slut shaming scientific method out of this.
I think it was framed as a parenthetical because the author acknowledges that it couldn't possibly happen overnight. Feminists and other progressives have already been working on it for several decades now, and a great deal of progress has been made, but it will take several more decades to see the kind of results we…
So getting blackout drunk and making yourself vulnerable invites trouble? Who would have thought!!!
Actually, the study doesn't say that. The study says that the sexual aggression wasn't associated with alcohol use by the aggressor. It only correlates to alcohol use by the target.
"... suggesting that drunk women are intentionally targeted by predators who are fully aware of what they're doing."
Yeah, I thought the tone of the article was interesting with the "Sorry, rape apologists" line at the end of the first paragraph. I haven't seen nearly as many op-eds shrugging off rape with "Well, men just get more sexually aggressive when they drink" arguments as I have "Well, ladies are just more vulnerable to…
I hate victim blaming, but there is a valid discussion to be had about women taking measures that help create an environment of safety. Being incredibly drunk does not in any way excuse rapists, but it does make a woman more likely to be targeted, which this study attests to.
No offense, but this is a really garbage study.
Emily Yoffe doesn't say it's a woman's fault if she's drunk...she's encouraging women to consider how drinking might make them more vulnerable to assault, and determine if they want to alter their behavior. Most people take steps to limit their vulnerability to all sort of crime...but regardless of the state of the…
Maybe bars should have plainclothes bouncers.
Being drunk doesn't change who you are, it just makes it more difficult to hide who you are.
Don't worry, I brought protection.
"Rapes are common. False rape accusations are not."
It's commonly accepted to be 2-8% of all reported (to the police) rape accusations.
