I have a confession to make...

I dug even deeper.  Excluding disease caused by alcohol, about 11,000 deaths occured from drunk driving in 2017 in addition to about 2,000 yearly deaths from alcohol poisoning.  These are the direct deaths that I think would compare better with mass shooting deaths.

There were almost 11,000 drunk driving deaths in 2017 and there are around 2,000 deaths from alcohol poisoning per year.  Those are deaths directly attributed to alcohol.

I played basketball at San Jose Christian College (now William Jessup University, in Rocklin) in downtown San Jose and we played Menlo a few times over the years.  I loved living in the Bay Area and really miss it these days.
