I would argue, as I do most things, release order is the way to go, the Reboot movies are pretty obtuse even by Evangelion standards. 3.0 is deeply confusing and while 3.0+1.0 does clarify its also a nearly 3 hour movie. Basically, the rebuilds total are most of the length of the original show.

Just because something is controversial and unsatisfying does not actually make it a challenging and meaningful ending. Its not that the choices were limited, its that all the endings flew in the face of the themes of unity and self-determination that defined the series up to that point. They don’t make thematic sense.

I dont get why people stick their necks out for the ‘lay down and die’ ending as if its anything less than insulting.

The series presents you with these conclusions and does not allow you, the player, to argue against them. There isn’t much room here for interpretation.

Even more amazing, the game explicitly refers to this ‘Miquella’ character and repeatedly foreshadows his importance and shows his arm hanging out of an egg in the game which they also show in the trailer. So maybe he has something to do with it.
