Traditional media companies don’t “need” Twitter. I suppose it was a nice way to promote some things or whatever, but they got along fine before it came along.

As the outlet points out, Twitter’s inactivity policy states that “prolonged inactivity” can result in an account being removed, but that inactivity is based on logging in, not tweeting.
