Ah yes, the apocryphal books of the Pearlble.
Ah yes, the apocryphal books of the Pearlble.
What are you defining as "hipster rock" here?
it is
As soon as I heard the music in the episode, my thoughts went to the following:
"Wait, are they actually using licensed music? This doesn't sound like their style of production."
"HOW HAVE I NOT HEARD OF THIS ARTIST BEFORE? THIS IS EXACTLY IN MY WHEELHOUSE."
Punk Quartz.
I loved her read of the line "I think I'll try drinking tonight." So innocently suave.
Realtalk, I wanna see fanart of Pearl dressed as a gangster of that era, because I'm picturing her in a pinstripe suit and bowler hat and she totally can rock it.
Thank you for reminding me of that song. I feel like I listened to it way more than anything else around like 5 or so years ago before I really understood any of the references in it (beyond going, "wait, California Dreamin' isn't the Beach Boys," without thinking, "oh, right, they had that meh cover").
I write like a comment

I read a comment.
Uh, I don't know if you're joking or if you're legitimately unfamiliar with this bit of slang.
No, "the shit," as in a really cool thing.
People tend to disparage modern day cartoons for making current pop culture references, yet it's a practice that's been commonplace ever since the birth of cartoons as a mainstream art form. I feel like there's something of a disconnect when people try to decide what stuff from today is gonna be seen as timeless…
I wouldn't really blame it on Amethyst's singing voice (and I feel like that song isn't the best way to judge it), especially since the melody just was too bleh for anyone to really make it work. I'm disappointed they still haven't given Amethyst a decent solo song of her own. As far as I can recall at least—I think…
It'd be interesting if the townspeople had recognized Steven but played along anyway, but chances are there just wasn't enough room in the running time for even just a quick line alluding to that.
Ha!
Got a particular recommendation from him?
There is that, but I'm not 100% aware that the comics are totally canon.
Oh yeah, "Tower of Mistakes" I wasn't even sure why they bothered with that song. It didn't even really fit the flow of that episode, just suddenly coming up like that, and especially jarring what with how subtly they usually express Amethyst's inner struggles. "Dear Old Dad" I never even remember exists.
This is why you don't mess with Steven's funky flow.
I would love to see a Steven Universe version of Coraline.
