Yep, I think this is the real value add to this trick. We Americans act broadsided when gas prices spike and then as soon as they drop go back to driving lifted F150s.
I agree that the concept as prevented is stupid. The only point at which it makes sense is if this self inflicted pain causes you to remember the real pain of when gas prices were higher, thereby driving you to purchase a more fuel efficient car.
