That is not at all what I have said. If you had bothered to read my comments, you would have seen that I have said repeatedly that she deserves to deal with consequences. I have said that we should be paying attention to this situation.

I don't pretend to be. There you go again, being unpleasant and dismissive and not really having a point. I'm not surprised either—that's the internet we all know and love! How about this? You're so sophisticated. Your jadedness shames me!
You're still not getting what I'm saying. Maybe that's my fault because my writing skills are not up to dealing with such a sensitive situation. But part of it is on you for not coming at this in the spirit of trying to understand each other.
You know, I totally agree with you. There are consequences. People do have hurt feelings. I am not at all saying that this should not be. What I am saying is that this issue has now been everywhere for a couple of days. Are we saying anything new about it? Is anyone continuing to be hurt? I would prefer to see…
Thank you for being another person who is able to find my words for me. I'm not a great writer and I realize that it is very important to be one in order to discuss such sensitive issues.
I certainly don't pretend to be a great writer. I am sure that I could word things more clearly and more eloquently. However, I do believe that you are trying your best to spin and be offended by what I have said. And in doing so, you are demonstrating my point.
You said it more eloquently than I was able to. It was right to call out Julianne Hough, but I wish we could devote the same energy to more complex, more harmful situations. I would love to see the same level of outrage and wordage directed at stop-and-search policies and/or Barneys.
You are not hearing what I said. Please go back and read what I wrote.
This is not at all what I said. Please go back and read what I have actually written, not what you want me to have written.
I totally support discussing racism. And any other issue that hurts people. What upsets me is to see a relatively harmless, unimportant issue flogged to death. This is what I'd expect from some tabloid, not from Jezebel. It is lazy. It hurts people who are being harmed right now by real racists and who are not…
Are you sure it not that I'm not immediately and unquestioningly buying into your outrage that bugs you? Frankly, if you feel offended for being held to the same exact standard that you are insisting on for others, then I am not sorry that I sounded patronizing!
Well, again—days and days worth of articles saying the same thing about Julianne Hough's idiocy strikes me as manufactured outrage. There are situations that are not obvious, but I suspect most people would agree that we've squeezed every drop of outrage out of the Julianne Hough situation at this point.
I spent years living in the Southern Hemisphere and I know exactly what you're talking about. The only thing that surprises me is that you only saw ~50 posts from people who don't understand what the big deal is about blackface!
I have to admit that (having spent most of my childhood overseas) I had no idea about the fried chicken stereotype until I was of an embarrassingly advanced age.
Well, she now has a reputation as being an idiot. That's the consequence. And I hope that when you—like me—inevitably say something idiotic that offends someone, that you'll be as tough on yourself.
Well, I am being flippant about your question regarding Julianne Hough because I do believe most people would think she meant no harm. You do raise a very valid point about when, in general, to turn on the outrage switch.
Well, it seems like she has now been educated to the point that that won't be a problem in future.
Congratulations on finding something to be offended about! Take a poll. Based on this incident, how many people believe Julianne Hough is a closet racist who wants to suppress black people?
Right. And what worries me is that when we dramatize every, single idiotic thing a famous person does, people get outrage fatigue. When an actual harmful racist comes along (generally someone who is not so famous), people aren't interested anymore.
Well, and not only that. I read somewhere that she attended dance school overseas during her teens. So it is entirely possible she missed those lessons in school and in popular culture.
