I don’t think everyone is taking into account just how expensive a properly molded M-style wide body would be. The front fenders could likely be used from an M3, but the rear arches would take a lot of work and coin to get right.

Very similar mindset in the bmw world. The standard 2.5L I6 “M50" from the 90s is very cheap (and slow in NA form) compared the M equivalent S50, but the M50 holds up to gobs and gobs of boost over the S50 variant. With boosting in mind, the M50 is the far cheaper and better choice.
