There are servers which use all the expansions or none. If you don't have an expansion, then you can't enter a server which have them enabled…

The Gen IV (or rather Diamond and Pearl specifically) animations and combat were so slow, it was really hard to play. Mind you, it isn't a bad game overall, it's just less good than the others in the series. (not including the bug ridden Gen I, which I love of course, but oh my god.)

The only reason people complained (that I have seen) was because you couldn't transfer from Gen I/II. Other than that Ruby and Sapphire are great games.
