Yep. The phrase “well-intentioned”, especially when followed by “but”, is by definition a negative statement no matter how you slice it. It’s an acceptable statement if you’re *trying* to critique something, but it’s definitely expressing a negative opinion.

Although (in only semi-related news), I had corn & mayonnaise sushi at a conveyer-belt sushi restaurant the last time I was in Japan, and it was unabashedly fantastic. It was exactly what it sounds like...sushi rice wrapped in seaweed and topped with cooked corn kernels and Kewpie mayonnaise.
