i got super lucky. I started playing pokemon late, so the first game i played was Y. I was going around in the abandon hotel and in the garbage i found a shiny trubbish. He was super cool. Then, on my way up to the elite four, i found a shiny poliwhirl. Not so cool, but it was a cool experience.
