It’s clear from the trailer part of this was filmed at Doune Castle, about 25 miles north of Glasgow. The same location was also used for Outlander (pictured), Monty Python and the Holy Grail and many other films.

You don’t NEED to see them. It would be helpful but certainly not necessary. There are several expository scenes in this movie that fill in the back stories.
