Take one World Cup. A few million people in the U.S. jump on the fan bandwagon. Almost all forget about soccer afterwards, but some (3%?, 5%?) stay interested, learn more about the game and become literate, consistent fans without being poseurs.

From a U.S. citizen: Being in a stadium during a World Cup match and hearing tens of thousands of Dutch fans singing the Triumphal March from Aida is awesome. The U.S. fans are dullards in comparison.
