The most widespread digital radio technology, DAB/DAB+ can’t succeed in the USA, as the US military has locked down the most effective part of its spectrum, the L band. From a quick Wikipedia read, it looks like the FCC has hobbled digital FM, limiting any station to only push 10% of transmission power for parallel

Australia has rolled out DAB+ terrestrial radio. We’ve retained AM and FM radio for now, but it’s probably only a matter of time before some of that spectrum is sold off, as happened with our switch from analogue to digital TV recently. Operating costs for DAB+ stations are lower, we’ve consequently seen many more

DAB isn’t a subscription service. It is a free-to-air radio technology. It’s new enough that most people will need to buy a new radio to listen. This is like the change from analogue mobile phone to GSM digital mobile phone.

DAB and DAB+ are radio. If you want to listen, you just ‘steal’ it right out of the air.
