@Mikestan: A fix is extremely likely but no recall. Letterman is in it for the comedy and CR, strangely enough, ranks the iPhone 4 ahead of the Evo 4G and all other recent smartphones.

@Mikestan: As far as I know companies only recall products if they are defective enough to cause injury or death. The only casualty of the "death grip" is the iPhone itself. Recall, along with it's expense, makes no sense when only a few are complaining. Don't be fooled by the bashing coverage.

I knew Apple wouldn't go another week without taking a more official stance. Forget the price drop. This is completely different than the first iPhone. All they have to do is announce the positive feedback they've been getting (which supposedly is substantial) and let it be known that if you are having issues to

@Ccomfort: Judging by the hammer and the picture above the directors and producers seem to be taking the movie towards the power rangers direction. Cheesy indeed.

@zhinker: I guess I need to clarify. That hammer looked tremendously cheesy. Just like the pictures above. That's the reason why I'm not looking forward to the Thor movie.

I lost faith when I saw the hammer at the end of Ironman 2.

@Karmakazi: That depends on which version of the iPhone and firmware you are talking about. You could spend many hours downgrading, upgrading, restoring, and putting all your data back in the phone (specially true if you have 20+ GB).

@mms1648: seriously though, that would be amazing. No need to waste hours jailbreaking. One day.

I hope this fixes the proximity sensor. I'm not much of a talker on the phone but the last thing I want is having anxiety over sensor placement on my ear.

@2 replies: It would surprise the hell out of me if they actually allow this fiasco to continue for more than a week. It's a shame for Apple not to admit fault and allowed it to go this far.

@2 replies: I agree how minor the flaw is is relative. Nobody is arguing the issue exist, the argument here is to allow the company to properly response before we start tagging this as the "the biggest failure in consumer electronics." In our little 'Giz world' we tend to forget a couple of million people have the

@MazdaMania: I have. I like the widgets and notifications. Despise the hardware and the UI feel needs a bit more work. Just my opinion. Android is coming along nicely but for me it's not ready, or I'm not ready for it.

@Richard Servello: i did not know that, however, I was thinking more like in the mobile space. That seems to be where most of the effort in developing is gravitating to.

On a relate note, why isn't Google Earth integrated with Google Maps?

You guys are talking like Apple is Enron or BP (even though the PR response is comparable). Keep things in perspective. This is a minor flaw that affects a small portion of iPhone 4 owners sometimes.

@gemcosta: Thanks for that. Is that you?

@Lodril: Long tunnels. Lincoln Tunnel?

@That_was_totally_Batman: That's what I was thinking, but it seems like the opacity of the glass in front of the proximity sensor might be what's causing the quirkiness. At least according to the "giz reader" claim that the new iphone he received has a more visible proximity sensor.

The proximity sensor issue is definitively the real problem for me since I haven't been affected by the reception issues. I'm getting very inconsistent results when applying the 'death grip'. Sometimes bars drop or not, sometimes data downloads/uploads stay the same, more, less—-varies even in the same location.
