If it's like the older games I think you can save anywhere depending on the difficulty level chosen. I can't recall exactly but difficulty might also have limited saves from maybe zero to seven. Therefore, you don't need checkpoints, just need to make a wise decision of when to save.

The game has the same kind of choice-consequence mechanics as The Walking Dead. Just like The Walking Dead, the game is still linear, but your decisions at various points do matter.
