3 or 4 less episodes =/= 3 or 4 less hours. The epsiode count excuse just plain and simply doesnt work. Time-wise they maybe had an hour less than previous 10 episode seasons. 1 less hour doesn't even come close to justifying this mess of a season. 

GRRM already said the books and show will end the same, that only the paths taken to get there, will obviously be different because of the divergence.
