The furry fandom began in 1980-well before Space Jam. The film more associated with inspiring it is Disney’s Robin Hood (which is only partially correct-the film that inspired it most was Animalympics). 

Part of why Dan Houser left was because he felt due to real entertainment becoming such a mockery of itself he was having a harder and harder time coming up with ways to satire it. GTA used to be edgy. Now mainstream entertainment has become GTA.
