Better to toss a contactless induction pickup over the power line. It works (I've tried it), it's safe, and it's easy to retrieve. Just don't get observed doing it.

Simple solution: buy an iPod touch for iOS apps, and a Verizon Android phone for its apps + voice + (via tethering) data for the iPod. Best of all worlds.

If you dip the antenna band in Kool-aid, the reception problems go away.
