Yes there is an assumption. But that assumption is based on reality. A lot of these things ARE mainstream beliefs in the Muslim world. Not EVERY Muslim believes in FGM but a lot of them do.

They get asked because all these terrible things about Islam like FGM, horrible women’s rights, Nikhabs, hijabs, believing homosexuality is punishable by death or leaving Islam is punishable by death are features of the religion itself (fundamental beliefs) not bugs. 

The sad truth is that for the vast majority of muslims their religion IS their most defining characteristic. They are Muslim before anything else.
