I first heard of him in the 1983 Rolling Stone Rock 'n Roll Encyclopedia (which I read cover-to-cover in about 1998 at age 13), and I was fascinated that such a person had ever existed. I remember making reference to him on the bus one time and getting a bunch of blank stares.

It's three references in one!

The highlight of his career!

That movie was on cable constantly in the 90s.

Worked for me. My wife and I originally bonded over a shared love of the Muppets, which is a pretty specific thing to be super-excited about.

"Mars" is the only one of those I've heard, and for whatever it's worth, it's one of my least-favorite 8th Doctor stories I've heard. I agree on the coarseness of the dialogue, which is just as unusual for the 8th Doctor audios as it is for the series in general. It's a pity that that's the one they got Simon Pegg and

I don't really know how to say anything about this story without also getting into "Zagreus," so I'll refrain from comment for the time being, except to say that I also really enjoyed this one.

I went ahead and bought it (as well as preordering the second volume). I still have a bunch of other 8th Doctor audios to get through before that point, but I wanted to take advantage of the sale.

I'm not crazy about "Tooth & Claw," but I'll always love that it establishes the Doctor as a fan of The Muppet Movie. Since Ten obviously hadn't had time to sit down and watch it, I wonder which incarnation did. I could see either 2 or 4 having the right sensibility to dig it.

I think it's definitely the weakest of RTD's four seasons, in any case. I agree that all of the episodes you cited are pretty bad, although I'd put "School Reunion" in the classic pile too. That might just be due to my affection for Sarah Jane and for Giles, but so be it. I adore that episode.

I actually really enjoy it for the first 2/3 or so. But yeah, everything after the Absorbaloff reveals itself is just awful.

Thanks for the tip! I really should buy Dark Eyes.

Jason, and yeah, he was horrible.

I wouldn't call him a racist character, necessarily. He was created, performed, and chiefly written by Matt Robinson (the original Gordon) and was intended to portray an inner-city kid from a black perspective. Opinions varied on how well the show met that goal. In addition to being criticized as a stereotype, he was

Dabney Coleman is available!

Not his brother, his brother-in-law! Danny's late wife was Jesse's sister.
